Web 2.0 for Teachers and Students

What Web 2.0 tools are available to teachers and students?

Before the tools available to teachers and students using Web 2.0 are discussed Web 2.0 must be defined.  Web 2.0 consists of internet tools or applications that are generated by users, can be edited easily to add content and increases communication, best of all no downloads are required.  This can be extremely beneficial to educators and their students.
With these powerful tools teachers can set up blogs that outline assignments or other course material, publish "power point" like presentations that students can access at home, set up class websites that students can communicate about assignments over or class calendars that will let students know when assignments are due.  There is a seemly endless supply of new tools available to educators and their students because of this new way of thinking about communication.  The over arching principles behind Web 2.0 is community, ease of communication and sharing.  With the prominence of technology and the internet in our society today it seems quite natural for education to take advantage of the tools available.  Using these tools will further the goal of providing the best possible education and resource for students.

  1. There are many great Web 2.0 resources out there for teachers to use with their students. There is a great diagram on one of the articles that I read regarding Web 2.0...you may want to consider using it on your post, so there is a visual to show the different types of Web 2.0 tools that can be used in the classroom. http://oreilly.com/web2/archive/what-is-web-20.html

  2. As a teacher in the 21st century, understanding the relevance of Web 2.0 tools is beneficial. First, it presents information in a medium that is relevant to students. This may assist a teacher in keeping their interest during the learning process. At the same time, the Web 2.0 tools are collaborative in nature which is always well received in the classroom. Of course, like most technology, Web 2.0 presents risks that need to be understood.

I will be very interested in hearing the result of your inquiry project. I hope, as part of your presentation, that I can gain a better understand of ways to use Web 2.0 tools in my own teaching.

  3. This is a good, basic description for a novice like me in the world of Web 2.0. I'm just finding out all the possibilities a Wiki has while doing research for my part of the inquiry project. The one thing I am finding through trial and error is that Web 2.0 and all the blogging that can come of it is great except if you don't have an understanding of the nuts and bolts of computer lingo when you get an error message. It has taken me hours of fishing to try and even get my comments to post as I get "my cookies are full and my cache is null" errors.
